I would say it took me about 3 years to get past the intimidation and control also.

Has your " Self Esteem " Improved After Leaving Jehovah's Witnesses ?
by flipper init seems to be an issue that some have after leaving the witness cult because none of us were ever made to feel we were " good " enough or "valued " enough for what we were trying to accomplish in the cult.
growing up i had pounded into my head by my jw elder father what jesus said, " after doing all things remember you are good for nothing slaves , what we have done is what we ought to have done.
" then i thought to myself - " where's the joy in that ?

Great thread. Yes, as you pointed out Flipper in the OP, I have come a long, long way since leaving the JWs. But as my username indicates I do feel that my JW upbringing has left me scarred. I agree with Shamus above . It is something that I need to work on every day. If I don't or if I have a blow or disappointment I don't recover well. I think it's because I don't have that solid foundation. Thanks for the reminder to keep moving forward and to work on that self-esteem DAILY.

Some things you did as a JW that you look back at and laugh about
by gubberningbody ini remember that right after france did a job on the wtbs w/taxes on donations i used an email-harvester and spammed about 250,000 french email addresses with an advertisement for free bible studies and a link to the french site.. .
i remember getting some replies, like "you can't do that, that's illegal.
" and i said "i'm an american, and it's legal here.

I agree with aquagirl. Participating in those ridiculous skits on Thursday nights. My father, at one time, was the TMS "servant" as they called it back then. AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGHHHH!

During my nursing career, I worked for a short time on a psychiatric unit. There was an older woman on the unit that had bipolar disorder and psychotic episodes. She was OBSESSED with Bennie Hinn. I had never heard of the man before this. She would become violent if she couldn't watch him. This woman was in her mid-70s.

"Apostate" is not a word that is in my vocabulary. I am myself. I don't care at all what any JWs think.

My daughter has friends that go to a "Christian " high school. They all think that. And I think they get it from their parents.

What difference does it make if we are born in?
by wanderlustguy inborn in, what difference does it make?.
i was thinking about this one a lot over the last few weeks.
what difference does it make whether you were born into a cult or were brought in as a teen or adult?

Great thread. I relate to all of you. WLG and Scully I have built a pretty good life after leaving the JWs. But that's when my life began. My life before leaving and for about 10 years afterward was a bitch. It has gotten better.

You wouldn't recognize Gwinnett County now. It's changed a ton just since I moved here in 1994. But I lived in the Northlake area before that beginning in 1979. So I'm very familiar with Tucker.

Yes, THS is unrecognizable now. Mainstreet Tucker has changed quite a bit, too. But it looks very much the same. The stores and businesses have changed. I live about 15 minutes from downtown Tucker in Gwinnett County.
